EVERY RIVER HAS TO FLOW (Novella-4)

Picture

Standing inside, Nirmala felt a sort of uneasiness. What does he mean by knowing well? I just know him. But he said it as if we are old lovers! It is all right that once he asked me about it, but….
“Is it?” Asked her father. And looking in to the house, he called: “Nirmala?”

She came and stood inside, near the door.
“He has come with a marriage proposal for you.” Said her father.”For his son. Do you know him?”

It was a difficult question. She knew him of course, but not the way her father made it look.

“I have met him.”  She said.
“Is it all?” Asked her father. “But he says that you two know each other very well?”

When she remained silent, her father continued:
“Where did you meet him?” He seemed not happy with the developments.
“At my Guide’s...
“He is our relative.” Interrupted his father. “My son goes to him usually with his projects.”
Her father sat thinking for a moment and then said:
“Okay.  But we too want to see him.”
“Sure.  He will come tomorrow.  I shall send him.  I came now just to know whether you agree.”

Then he explained about the various facts related to a marriage.  About their wealth, his business etc.

Vimal came the next day with a friend. Her father was
much impressed by his style and looks, it seemed. But….

After the preliminaries, her father said:
“My daughter is doing research and she will be completing it soon. She completed her post graduation in literature from R.R. College. That is all about her. And now tell us about you. Where did you study? I mean, in which college?”

She knew that her father was well aware of the fact that he was not even a graduate, but asked it just to make him understand that she is far above him in education than he.
He sat silent for some time, the face bright crimson.    His friend sat beside him as if he is not interested in such minor matters.
At last he said in a throaty voice: “I thought that my father said it all to you.”
Her father went on looking at him as if recollecting something. Then he said:
“Yes. Yes.  Now I remember.  You did not complete your graduation.”
“Yes.”
“Okay.  But do not worry.  You can complete it even now.”
“But I do not intend do.”  He said. His words made her feel a sort of respect towards him. After all, he does not want to tell a lie.
“Why?”  Asked her father.
“Because I do not want to. I am already in business and I like it.”
“Then it is all right.  I just suggested.”

The marriage was fixed on a date after three months, to enable her to have her Doctorate.
The next picture in her mind was so vivid that she shuddered even at the thought of that.

The first night.

She was sitting in the decorated room. It was already 12‘0’ clock in the night.  Yet he was nowhere to be seen.

Suddenly, she felt panicky.  There was no specific reason for that, but someone within her seemed to warn her.

She looked out through the window.  The room was on the first floor of a huge building. Except her, there was seemingly nobody in the building. Then she remembered that his father had said of his having a separate house.  Maybe, this is the house. And we are alone here.

Her mind filled with great expectations.

Then the door opened and he entered. And she got up and looked at him.

It was unbelievable!
