Father P. D. Mathew, S.J

On May 29, 2016, Reverend Father P. D. Mathew, S.J. is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his priesthood. He was ordained on May 29th, 1976 at St. Thomas Church, Paippad, Changanachery by Rev. Joseph Powathil, Archbishop Emeritus of Changanachery Archdiocese.

A member of the Society of Jesus, Fr. P. D. Mathew holds the unique distinction of being the first priest in India to also hold a law degree. After earning his law degree from M. S. University, Baroda, Gujarat, Fr. Mathew has been practicing law in and out of the courts to preach the good news of human rights and justice to the poor and the oppressed all over India during the past 35 years. He is currently serving as Director of NyayDarshan, an organization in Gujarat, India, dedicated to serving the underserved.
Fr. Mathew carries out his work via legal literacy campaign, publication of booklets and magazines on laws in English and Gujarati, training of social and religious animators, giving legal counseling to poor clients, through amicable settlement of disputes through LokAdalat, and by providing legal representation for the poor in the courts.

Fr. Mathew’s dedication and selfless service to others continues to be an inspiration for everyone. He sites the following Bible verse from the Gospel of St. Luke as inspiration for his work, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.”
